Troyes was not a city on my radar until the 2024 Tour de France. It was the start and finish town of Stage 9 that year. With the Olympics taking place in Paris, it was actually one of the closest points the Tour came to the capital. Because of this, I planned a route out there to watch the Tour, and I really enjoyed both the ride and the town.
Troyes is about 140 km southeast of Paris along the Seine River and is located within the Champagne region. The city has a medieval charm, with many half-timbered houses and narrow cobbled streets.

The route out to Troyes begins like a typical ride to Fontainebleau—along the Marne and up to Sucy-en-Brie. Instead of cutting down to Sénart, you continue southeast and head toward Vaux-le-Vicomte. You stay north of the château, not passing it directly, as you make your way through many small villages and quiet, remote stretches of countryside.
Around 95 km in, there’s a little restaurant, Chez Grand'Mère, which worked out well for a mid-ride refuel. The route continues southeast, winding through very small villages until you reach Troyes. While there is a lot of open farmland, there are enough trees and towns along the way to keep things interesting and enjoyable.
The route brings you toward the town center and eventually to the train station, though it doesn’t pass through the true historic center. I do recommend exploring a bit before heading back, but be aware that it can be quite crowded with pedestrians. The narrow streets may require you to walk your bike in places. Since you’re in the Champagne region, it’s only right to enjoy a glass—or a bottle—before heading home.
The train back takes around 2 hours and 15 minutes with one transfer, arriving at Gare de l’Est. It’s a TER (regional) train, and you do need to reserve a bike space when booking your ticket. There are plenty of train times available, making it an easy day trip—or you could turn it into a weekend and give yourself more time to explore.
