Getting Your Shift Together: Derailleur Quick Tune

There are plenty of detailed resources out there for setting up and tuning shifting, but this is meant to be a quick high-level overview. The goal here is to help you do a quick tune-up, not a full installation. The concepts covered apply to both mechanical and electronic shifting. The main difference is how indexing is adjusted, but more on that later.

There are three main adjustments involved in a quick derailleur tune:
High limit screw
Low limit screw
Cable tension / barrel adjuster
What Does What: Simplified
looking from the back of the bike towards the front
High limit screw = how far right the derailleur can move
Low limit screw = how far left the derailleur can move
Cable tension = everything in between (indexing)

Before starting, an important note: if your derailleur hanger is bent, these adjustments will not solve your shifting issues. Take a look from behind the bike and make sure the derailleur appears aligned with the cassette. A hanger can sometimes be bent back carefully or replaced. Ideally this is done with the proper alignment tool, but in a pinch an adjustable wrench can help get it close enough to ride.
Let’s start with the rear derailleur, since it typically needs adjustment more often.
High Limit Screw
Shift into your large front chainring and the smallest cog on the rear cassette, clicking your shifter until it stops. Then turn the barrel adjuster clockwise 1 turn to make sure there isn’t too much cable tension influencing the derailleur position.

The upper jockey wheel of the derailleur should line up directly with the smallest cog of the cassette. To adjust the derailleur position:
Tighten the high limit screw to move the derailleur inward (left)
Loosen the high limit screw to move farther outward (right)
Once you have shifted and loosened the limit if needed until you are In the smallest cog I like to tighten the screw until it sounds like the chain is about to shift up to the next gear, then back it out slightly until everything runs quietly.
Cable Tension and Indexing
Next comes indexing adjustment. On mechanical shifting systems, this is controlled by cable tension through the barrel adjuster.
The barrel adjuster is usually located where the cable enters the derailleur. Turning it:
Counterclockwise tightens cable tension
Clockwise loosens cable tension
Start shifting toward larger cogs. If the shifting hesitates or refuses to move up the cassette, add cable tension in small increments (turning counter clockwise) this will almost certainly needed to do this since we loosened it in step one.
The goal is smooth and quick shifts into larger cogs without creating hesitation when shifting back down into smaller cogs. If the cable becomes too tight, downshifts will start feeling slow or sticky.
I usually get the indexing close before moving on to the low limit screw, and then come back afterwards for a final tweak.
Low Limit Screw
The low limit screw works similarly to the high limit screw, but you need to be a little more careful because incorrect adjustment can send the chain into the spokes.

Slowly shift all the way into the largest cog. If the chain overshifts, grab the brake to stop the wheel and tighten the limit screw until the pully wheels are inline with the largest cog. If it is not shifting fully up to the largest gear, you can loosen the limit screw very slowly until it shifts, again being careful to not allow it to go too far.
Once you can shift into the largest gear, slowly tighten the low limit screw until the derailleur drops down one cog smaller. Then slowly loosen the screw until it shifts back onto the largest cog.
This helps set the limit as tight as possible while still allowing access to the biggest cog, reducing the risk of overshifting into the wheel.
Final Adjustments
Once the limits are set, run back through the indexing one more time.
If you’re using electronic shifting, this is the point where you would fine-tune indexing using either the manufacturer’s app or the button sequence for your specific drivetrain. Personally, I find the app much easier.
Shift through all the gears and remember:
Hesitation shifting to larger cogs usually means the cable needs more tension (counterclockwise)
Hesitation shifting to smaller cogs usually means the cable tension needs to loosened (clockwise)
Front Derailleur
These same principles apply to the front derailleur. Low screw if for the small ring, High screw is for the large ring, and cable tension.
Depending on the bike, the barrel adjuster for the front may be:
On the derailleur itself
Along the downtube
on the shifter or in line near the handlebars
If you’re unsure, check the manual or look up your specific groupset online.
If you can’t shift into the large chainring, the cable often isn’t tight enough to reach the high limit screw. So, if that’s the case after adjusting the low limit, add more tension until you can shift.
Final Thoughts
Once everything is adjusted properly, you should have smooth and reliable shifting again.
The limit screws should not need frequent adjustment, but cables do naturally stretch over time. The most common tune-up is simply adding a little cable tension when shifting starts to feel slow or hesitant.
